Subaru, originally known as Fuji Heavy Industries, emerged out of the end World War II in Japan, when a number of smaller manufacturers decided to merge to form the company. These four original manufacturers included engine makers, coachbuilders, chassis builders, and scooter manufacturers.

The CEO of Fuji Heavy Industries at the time, Kenji Kita, wanted the company to become involved in car manufacturing. And soon plans began for a car entitled the P-1 were formed. Mr. Kita looked far and wide for a name that was more inspiring than that, but heard no proposals that he took to. In the end, he named the car something 'close to his heart'; Subaru. Subaru is the name of the Pleiades star cluster in Japan. The first Subaru car was named the Subaru 1500, and in the following years, the company engineered dozens of more models like the Sambar, the R-2, the Alcyone, the Exiga, and in later years, models that we would recognize today, like the Forester, Impreza, and Legacy begin to emerge in the 1990s.

Subaru first established a presence in the US in 1968, and their Subaru of Indiana production plant is one of the only ones in the country to be designated a Backyard Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. The automaker does even more for the environment in addition to that prestigious rating, and has made a name for themselves in the Rally Sports world as well.
